Thursday evenings are perfect for dinner and some live music around the Rome area. Russell McClanahan & the mOOn Crew perform old time string band music in the Harvest Moon dining room. Jon Byrd performs acoustic originals and favorites in the downstairs bar for an evening dinner crowd at 333 on Broad. Scott Warren & the Booze Mountaineers will play their home grown Appalachian rock in the bullpen at Santa Fe Cattle Co.

There is also another special dinner performance this Thursday in the Schroeder’s Courtyard. It’s the first of the summer poetry night series featuring readings by poets Mike Dockins and Laura Carter.

FRIDAY

Jon Byrd is working overtime this weekend. He’ll be performing his acoustic originals and favorites at the Moon Roof Bar this Friday night. It feels right nice up there this time of year.

Ray & Eric are in love with making music. They love playing with their full band but they also enjoy performing intimate acoustic shows with just the two of them. The best part is their fans enjoy both versions. They’ll be doing the stripped down version this Friday night at 333 on Broad.

As soon as My Ninja stepped onto the scene last year they’ve been dropping jaws and mad grooves with a nod to left of the dial rock from the 80’s and 90’s. They will perform their fresh sounds at the 400 Block Bar this Friday night

Brother Shine is an acoustic folk country artist from Carrollton. With influences like Steve Earle, John Hiatt, and Lyle Lovett, it’s no doubt that Brother Shine leans towards the craft of songwriting. He’ll be at Johnny’s Pizza Friday evening.

SATURDAY

What in the world is Dingus Con? Take three of our local music scene’s current and past movers and shakers and unleash them into a world without boundaries. Check out their show this Saturday night at the 400 Block Bar and then tell me what you think it is. The moments that I have peered in upon were splendid.

Scott Warren is a guy who can fill up a room with sound all by himself with booming Southern rock vocals and effortless guitar picking. Nonetheless, he has accumulated a crew of the area’s finest musicians that are the Booze Mountaineers. Check it out this Saturday evening at the Moon Roof Bar.

Old Havana Cigar Co. is excited about the return of Thunderbolt Patterson this Saturday. The duo made up of David Bell and Tim Bowen bring a smorgasbord of instruments that are played with precision throughout their show of obscure deep cut covers and originals. They put out way more sound than you would expect for a duo.

Hard working Donny Hammonds plays relentlessly all over the region and loves it. He returns to Johnny’s Pizza this Saturday to share his passion for performing great acoustic music.

FRIDAY

Mr. Mean’r is one heck of a party band that have no problem with cranking out the tunes that make the people move. They’ll be at 333 on Broad this Friday night.

The Moon Roof Bar welcomes back Julie Gribble. Singing, songwriting, and performing comes naturally to Julie and her country-influenced Americana music has landed her all kinds of opportunities like touring the U.S. and Canada, opening up for major label artists, and performing on television and radio.

DJ’s Tavern is hosting a night of some of the most explosive punk rock bands in the region, offering sets from Unseen Stimuli, Drop Dead Nasty, Nosecone Prophets and Local Union. There will be plenty of energy to go around Friday night at DJ’s.

Johnny’s Pizza has been bringing a lot of fresh faces to the local music scene and will continue to do that Friday evening with the acoustic music of Mario Diaz.

SATURDAY

kiss-army-blog.jpgThe long awaited KISS Army concert at the Historic Desoto Theatre in Downtown Rome is finally upon us this Saturday. This is the official KISS tribute band authorized by all of the members of KISS. They take they’re show to the late 70’s when the band was in it’s finest form as far as performance, catalog, and stage presence. Opening is one of Rome’s favorite tribute acts, the Georgia Blues Brothers, as well as the winner of the Roman Roast on the River’s Battle of the Band’s People’s Choice award, PerFekt Peace.

Excitement builds as it’s finally time for the Roman Roast on the River at Ridge Ferry Park. The festivities kick off Friday night with music from Jerry on the Moon, last year’s winner of the Roman Roast Battle of the Bands. The evening will continue with A1A, the Jimmy Buffett tribute band that is authorized by Jimmy himself. It will be trop rock all night long.

You can also feel the breeze while checking out Donny Hammonds as he performs a massive catalog of favorites that will have the Moon Roof Bar hopping. This time of year really is perfect for that place.

The Atlanta-based Shea’s Gin will return to the 400 Block Bar after rocking the crowd last time on their inaugural visit to Rome. They put an indie edge to traditional folk and celtic. Let’s welcome these guys back and check out some fresh faces and styles.

The Georgia String Band Festival kicks off at Harris Arts Center in Calhoun Friday night with two explosive acts, Georgia Crackers and New Binkley Brothers. This evening will undoubtedly kick off a deluge of picking and grinning.

SATURDAY

The Roman Roast on the River continues at Ridge Ferry Park with all kinds of fun family events including the showdown for this year’s Roman Roast Battle of the Bands. The Final Four has been decided and each band has worked very hard to make it there. The bands are Bent in Bama, Young Guns, last years runner up PerFekt Peace, and the #1 vote getter Mr. Synyster. The winner of the people’s choice award will open up the following weekend for the KISS Army at the Historic Desoto Theater. The winners of the judges award will perform at this year’s 4th of July Concert at Ridge Ferry Park.

The Schroeder’s Courtyard will kick start their season this Saturday night with a special double bill featuring the legendary Glenn Phillips Band and Supreme Court who is celebrating the release of their new album, Sun Hex. To say that Phillips is a great guitarist is a ridiculous understatement. Having performed with Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Allman Brothers Band, and Frank Zappa should say enough. Zappa was a huge fan as was the highly influential British DJ John Peel. He has been sited as a significant influence by Widespread Panic, Phish, and Pere Ubu. And if you think Glenn is great, wait till you hear the rest of the band.

Curiosity Shoppe has been known as one of the South’s best party bands since the 90’s. They are no strangers to throwing a party and Saturday night they’ll be moving the good people at 333 on Broad.

The Moon Roof is excited to host HootN’Annie, a group of charming young ladies that blend their original alt folk music with a new generation of cover tunes.

Paradise Gardens in Summerville was the home of the Reverend Howard Finster. Finster is internationally known for his folk art influence in pop culture. Since his passing the annual Finster Fest has celebrated his life with regional folk artists and musicians. This is one of the most interesting events every year and if you haven’t been to Paradise Gardens it is a must have experience in Northwest Georgia. The festival continues on Sunday.

Georgia String Band Festival continues Saturday afternoon at the Cherokee Capital Fairgrounds in Calhoun. The day will be filled by a nice list of top shelf regional and national string band artists including local favorites The Groundhawgs, Cheyenne Medders, and Jule Medders and the Conasauga Troubadors.
