Eclectic weekend of entertainment downtown (or nearby)

By Bryan Mullins/www.mullinsmania.com

TONIGHT: Poetry Night at Schroeder’s; Francisco Vidal at 333

Schroeder’s holds its monthly Poetry Night. This is a great opportunity to come listen to talented local writers read their work. It’s also a great opportunity for inspiring writers to meet others and trade thoughts.

Francisco Vidal has worked hard to become a respected contributor in the Atlanta area songwriters’ scene. We are glad that he has made Rome one of his favorite places to come and perform. He’ll be at 333 on Broad.

Russell McClanahan & the mOOn Crew will perform old time string band music for the dinner crowd at Harvest Moon. Over the years this has become one of the most cherished weekly events for Downtown Rome.

FRIDAY: Matt Chambers at DJ’s Tavern; Jason Lyles at the Moon Roof.

Devidasa is a band that showcases multiple instruments, multiples personalities, and multiple genres. They will perform their percussion driven world funk at the Schroeder’s Courtyard.

Clay Broome leads the John Lee Hookers into action once again. Friday night it’s at 333 on Broad where the room will be filled with raw blues guitar riffs and rockabilly swing. These guys put on a heck of a show.

Jason Lyles is a Chattanooga-based songwriter who blends power pop songwriting with Southern rock and alternative sounds which provide a very authentic sound. He has played all over the Southeast supporting his latest recording, Ethereal. He’ll spend Friday evening wailing these songs for the folks at the Moon Roof Bar.

DJ’s Tavern kicks off week number two with another one of Rome’s favorite performers, Matt Chambers. Matt will undoubtedly put on a great show for the folks over there on John Davenport Drive.

Rock Run Station hails from the Piedmont, Ala., area and has played 333 on Broad once before. They will be returning this Saturday evening to perform their fresh interpretations of modern rock ‘n’ roll. I’m sure they will be greeted with a joyful crowd.

chris-knight-blog.jpg

-Chris Knight sold out his last performance at 333 on Broad, and there is absolutely no doubt that this one will sell out, too. But don’t let that stop you from trying to be there. The Kentucky-based country singer and songwriter is well respected amongst critics, fans, and other modern and classic country artists. We are glad to have him come through Rome and are thankful for 333 on Broad for making that happen.

The Aids Resource Council presents A Little Night of Music III featuring local favorites Devidasa, Precious Lemons, and Cat Sellers. This is a great opportunity to support your community and enjoy great music at the same time. The show will take place at the Schroeder’s Courtyard.

jlh-400-blog.jpg

The John Lee Hookers will return to the 400 Block Bar where they have previously left crowds completely blown away with their tribute to the early blues masters and Memphis-based rockabilly. This is Clay Broome’s most recent project. He has accumulated an excellent trio that has been a complete success so far.

Scott Thompson will be back at 333 on Broad. Scott is one of Rome’s favorite performers who never seems to lose momentum. With a great personality and a diverse selection of original tunes and classics, folks always leave happy from a Scott Thompson show.

Buck & Duke make a welcome return to the event calendar with a Saturday night performance at DJ’s Tavern. Buck & Duke made serious waves with their first album that featured the hit “All Roads Lead to Rome.”

By Bryan Mullins/Mullinsmania.com

Well, what do you know? Yet another fantastic weekend of fun things to do in Rome. I’m starting to get tired of enjoying it all. Just kidding, bring it on.

TONIGHT: Futurebirds buzzing at Schroeder’s; Muletide, Badlands, too

Futurebirds make some of the freshest music that’s out right now. It’s kind of a mix of psychedelic country rock reminiscent of The Byrds but with a very modern flavor and fun sing-along vocals. One of the six members is Rome’s own Payton Bradford, which is why they make a point to cruise through Rome on their way around this half of the country. They’ll be at Schroeder’s this evening with Muletide Perkins and Badland Bad Boy opening.

fbirds-blog.jpg

Russell McClanahan & the mOOn Crew will entertain the dinner crowd at Harvest Moon with their homage to old time string band music.

FRIDAY: Cornbread Killers at Moon Roof; Curiosity Shoppe at 333

The Cornbread Killers will return to the Moon Roof. They may or may not attack their delicious jalapeno cornbread, but they will definitely put on a great show of original rock music scattered with a fine choice of covers.

The 400 Block Bar will host Southern Thread, a blues soaked Southern rock band featuring local blues guitarist Stephen Smith. These guys put on a great show and are working on releasing their first cd.

Curiosity Shoppe has been rocking venues all over the Southeast for years now and have not let up since. They will be at 333 on Broad this Friday evening for a guaranteed great and highly attended show.

SATURDAY: Jazzy start to 2010 Classic Car Cruise-in; RSO on the go

The Classic Car Cruise-In returns to Downtown Rome this Saturday evening. Last year provided a great opportunity to check out and/or show off your classic model car (25 years or older). This year, they are amping it up with live bands and a wider location. The Cruise-In will be held at Midtown Transit behind Harvest Moon and will feature great music by the Jazz Merchants, The Hip-Knotics, Georgia Blues Brothers, and Scott Thompson & Peachtree Station. This is a great fun and free event for the whole family. (5-9 p.m.)

classic-car-blog.jpg

Soylent Red can count the times they’ve played in Rome on one hand, but they have all been very memorable shows. These guys excel at rocking classic rock & blues but their original songwriting blends those roots with fresh alt rock tunes. A must see. They’ll be playing their original material in the Schroeder’s Courtyard.

The Rome Symphony Orchestra will perform An Evening of Pops with special guest Adam Frey on the euphonium. There will be special performances by Darlington students as well and the performance will take place at Darlington’s Huffman Center.

DJ Robbie Loco
is known for keeping a close finger on the pulse of classic roots and modern reggae and hip-hop. He’ll be spinning records at the 400 Block Bar this Saturday evening. Last time was an absolute blast.

Don’t forget to check out the Cave Spring Arts Festival this Saturday and Sunday at Rolater Park in Cave Spring.

Ray & Eric are two dudes that just really enjoy playing laid back acoustic duet shows. They’ll be at 333 on Broad doing what they love the most.

Muletide Perkins will set up shop at the 400 Block Bar for an evening of original country blues based tunes and choice covers.

FRIDAY: Jamie Pelfrey at Bridgepoint; Dock has Collard Green Berets

The First Friday Concert Series at Bridgepoint Plaza continues with the Jamie Pelfrey Band, the latest country sensation from the Atlanta area. The show is free to the public and is always a great time throughout Rome’s warmer months.

Local country blues and Southern rock trailblazer Scott Warren will perform with his band, the Collard Green Berets, at the Dock on the Cotton Block directly following the First Friday concert at Bridgepoint Plaza.

gmen-blog.jpg

The “G” Men got rained out at their last attempt at the Schroeder’s Courtyard but they are bound and determined to try it again. The band includes some of Rome’s finest songwriters in Jule Medders, Rick McKee, David Elliott and David Bell. They will perform their originals individually and collaboratively. It is a great opportunity to delve into some local songwriting talent.

Backswing is one of Rome’s favorite bands performing a wide variety of crowd-pleasers with the greatest of ease. There is no question about the collective amount of skill in this band fronted by Lee Shealy and Alan Smith.

Jon Byrd is another of Rome’s favorites who has performed at 333 on Broad since the doors opened, earning a great group of folks who love his acoustic country rock tunes.

SATURDAY: Delicate Cutters, Muletide at Schroeder’s

delicatetide-blog.jpg

The Delicate Cutters is a Birmingham-band that blends roots and folks rock with an indie flavor and a keen sense of Southern gothic literature. They are led by Rome native Janet Simpson-Templin, who returns to the Schroeder’s Courtyard periodically to a group of die hard underground music fans. The Muletide Perkins Trio will open up featuring McG and BadLand.

The Fourth Annual Roman Classic Bodybuilding Competition will take place at the Rome City Auditorium. The Classic took flight under the direction of Maximum Nutrition’s Steve Bailey. This year he has passed the torch to R.D. who has competed for 20 years and judged the first three Classics. His determination to continue and grow the Roman Classic will be obvious at this year’s competition.

Todd Weaver is an acoustic alternative performer from Columbus, Ga., who has rocked the crowd at 333 on Broad over the past year. He’ll be back for more this Saturday.

MB’s Comedy Night returns with a hilarious combination of nationally touring comedians, Karen Mills and Andy Sanford.

SUNDAY: Indie rockers to set up at 7 Myrtle St.

poxmule-blog.jpg

Currently lacking the appropriate venue, there is a gentleman around town who has been putting on unique house shows featuring hard working, nationally touring bands sometimes more obscure than the norm but determined to leave their mark on the American music landscape. Sunday’s show will feature indie rockers TransAtlantic and Eagle Scout. Look them up and check them out. Kicking off the evening will be local songsters, The Pox and Muletide Perkins Trio. The show will be at 7 Myrtle St. in next to Myrtle Hill.

By Bryan Mullins

www.mullinsmania.com

Week after week, springtime is loaded with fantastic opportunities to catch live music. Some may think that Memorial Day weekend may offer slim pickings. That is incorrect. There is plenty to do and see this year for sure.

TONIGHT: Poetry night returns to Schroeder’s Courtyard

Poetry Night resumes in the Schroeder’s Courtyard, which is a great way to kick back for some dinner and enjoy local poetry. Tonight will feature local writers Clayton Jones, Jon Hershey, Jesse Bishop, Jessica Lindberg and more. Bring your own poetry as time may allow for guest readings.

Russell McClanahan & the mOOn Crew will perform their homage to old time string band music for the dinner crowd at Harvest Moon. This has become a welcome fixture in the weekly music lineup.

FRIDAY: Collard Green Berets at Moon Roof; Matt Chambers at 333

The Ashley Hill Project will perform tonight at Kilroy’s in VFW Post 4911 on the Cedartown Highway. Ashley has been writing and performing music for the last five years at least and has really developed a great sound and voice. This will be a treat.

Scott Warren & The Collard Green Berets bring their soulful Southern rock ‘n’ blues show to the Moon Roof, a great place to see one of Rome’s favorites.

Another one of Rome’s favorites will perform at 333 on Broad on Friday. Matt Chambers will take the stage for a night of great acoustic music that folks really get into every time.

lemons-ninja-blog.jpg

The Schroeder’s Courtyard offers up a great evening of original music from the Precious Lemons, which is a powerhouse of local talent including Greg & Natalie Ruddell, Clay Broome, and Chuck Harris. These guys put on a great show. Opening will be a band called My Ninja, who I have not yet heard but I know that the band members individually are very talented. Sounds like a lot of fun.

SATURDAY: The Dock adds live music; Shotgun Scooter at 333

shotgun-mule-blog.jpg

333 on Broad will host Shotgun Scooter, a fantastic band from Nashville that is a lot of fun. They have been enjoying promoting their latest album, Heathen’s Prayer, and will be bringing it to Rome. Their upbeat country drenched originals rock. Muletide Perkins will open the show with some picking and hollering.

Scott Warren & The Collard Green Berets will bring the show to Kilroy’s Saturday night. I believe this is the first time they will be there, and it is a perfect place to play for them. The band and the crowd are both going to love this one. Once again, Kilroy’s is at VFW Post 4911 on Cedartown Highway.

Clay Broome brings the John Lee Hookers to the Moon Roof Bar, which will provide an excellent opportunity to catch some seriously booming old school blues and rockabilly classics from deep within the vault.

unseen-pox-blog.jpg

Unseen Stimuli and The Pox will bring their raw punk rock to the deck on The Dock. Wow, that’s quite a mouthful. Both bands are loaded with raw energy and I’m super glad to see that The Dock is establishing itself as yet one more great place to catch live music downtown.

James Gregory is one hilarious dude. If you want to kick back and enjoy some nonstop laughter in the comfy atmosphere of the Historic DeSoto Theatre, then this is where you need to be.

Saturday: River Jam with Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Sammy Kershaw

Saturday is so packed full of music you just have absolutely no excuse for boredom if you are a music fan.

glenn-phillips2-copy-blog.jpgGlenn Phillips Band returns to the Schroeder’s Courtyard with an amazing band featuring Bill Rea, Jeff Calder and John Boissierre. Phillips is one of the most respected guitarists among fans and critics, including Rolling Stone magazine.

Thunderbolt Patterson is one of my favorite local acts hands down. David Bell and Tim Bowen are excellent with their raunchy interpretations of deep cut classics and original tunes. They’ll be over at Old Havana.

Kilroy’s Bar at VFW post 4911 offers a lineup of modern alt-rock bands including Silence the Day, Scarlet City, and Tir Asleen. This is a laid back place to see some rock ‘n’ roll.

river-jam.jpgRome River Jam returns and up to 10,000 people are expected to attend. The lineup features veteran country and bluegrass pickers, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Many remember them for their ’87 hit “Fishin in the Dark,” which is fine but their Will the Circle be Unbroken double album from 1972 is a country/bluegrass masterpiece. Sammy Kershaw is another country music staple while Luke Bryan and KneckDown are up-and-coming artists that have been making waves in the sea of contemporary country. This one takes place at Ridge Ferry Park.

After River Jam, many folks (not 10,000, though) will no doubt stroll over to 333 on Broad for the after-party featuring local Scott Warren & the Collard Green Berets, which is Southern rock & country blues at it’s finest.

Friday: Broad & Third at First Friday; Mixon, Soylent Red at the Roast

Friday offers and amazing lineup of music. Don’t be caught staying at home tonight.

Broad & Third will kick off this year’s First Friday Concert Series at Bridgepoint Plaza. These folks are all local musicians that got together sometime last year and have been rocking classic rock and dance hits ever since. The band includes Ed Hunt, Hal Ruland, Hal Richards, Tom Beck, Michael Beck, Becky McCord and Lisa Smith. It makes for a good time.

The Roman Roast on the River has finally arrived and the excitement is in the air! Romans and people from all over the Southeast will be showing off their BBQ skills. Friday offers great music from Georgia Mountain Music, local songwriter Renee Mixon, and Atlanta area blues rock act Soylent Red. Mixon is one of Rome’s faves and Soylent Red has rocked the house every time they’ve visited Rome. There is a lot to do Friday including the dessert and “everything but” competition. The Roast is put on by the Rome-Floyd Parks & Recreation Authority at Ridge Ferry Park in order to benefit the Rome Sports Hall of Fame Youth Scholarship Fund. So, all the fun you’ll be having will be going to the growth of our community’s youth.

Devidasa had a busy April bringing great vibes and grooves to our community all over the place. Tonight, they’ll be returning to the Schroeder’s Courtyard where they always have a great time.

Backswing returns to the Moon Roof Bar for an evening of talented musicianship and well loved tunes. These guys are pros and put on a great show every time with the greatest of ease.

Saturday: Barbecue and bands at Ridge Ferry; Foul Play at Kilroy’s

Roman Roast on the River continues at Ridge Ferry Park and there will be a lot of good eating going on as contenders showcase their BBQ skills. Devidasa will kick the day off to get everyone up and moving, followed a fine Rome jazz act, the Pollard Greens Jazz Quartet. Then Southern Thread, featuring local guitar shredder Stephen Smith, will perform their take on Southern rock. The John Lee Hookers will be up next which is Clay Broome’s homage to old style Southern blues, and local favorite David Bell will follow with his excellent tunes. The Rome-Floyd Parks & Recreation Authority will be hosting the 2010 Special Olympics at Darlington’s Chris Hunter Stadium this year. The event starts at 9:30 a.m. and will feature entertainment by the Just As I Am Choir and the One Step at a Time Dance Club.

Russell McClanahan & the mOOn Crew will be entertaining the dinner crowd at Harvest Moon with their old time string band sound.

I really enjoyed catching Julie Gribble at her last performance in Rome. She has been working diligently over the years at what comes naturally to her, which is writing, singing, and performing traditional Americana style acoustic music. Julie’s credentials are too many to name but I recommend looking her up because she is the real deal. Then you’ll definitely want to catch her tonight at 333 on Broad.

Friday: The John Lee Hookers, Hip-Knotics & Clocktower Classic

The 2010 Clocktower Classic kicks off Friday in various locations in Rome. This year is expected to be the biggest turnout yet.

The Hip-Knotics are back at 333 on Broad this Friday night to unleash some more of classic rock’s finest cuts, while mixing in some great originals as well. They feature members of The Beatless, who many have seen perform excellent renditions of classic Beatles’ tunes. Basically, they just opened up their repertoire and have been playing songs from Jimi Hendrix and Tom Petty among other greats.

hookers-apr-30-blog.jpg

Clay Broome’s latest installment is a blues drenched rock show called The John Lee Hookers. Broome leads a solid trio that delivers and excellent upbeat show of the real deal blues and rockabilly rhythms. They’ll be shredding it up at the 400 Block Bar.

This is an all afternoon and into the night event that features an excellent array of music and performance art including artists as diverse as Ogya, Devidasa, The Groundhawgs, and Scott Warren & the Collard Green Berets. at-boogie-blog.jpg

Atomic Boogie is an Atlanta area rockabilly swing group with a dirty blues sound. They get the crowd hopping every time with ease. This past weekend they rocked the V3 tent at Steeplechase and Saturday night they’ll be bringing the heat to the 400 Block Bar.

earth-day-blog.jpgMuletide Perkins is at it again. This time it’s going to be an Earth Day celebration at the 400 Block Bar. Not exactly sure what that means but you can count on ol’ Tide banging on a guitar and singing original country blues to the best that he can remember. The theme of the evening will be respect for our great Mother, to which we are all permanently attached.

Billy Florkowski performs favorites from artists like Dave Matthews and Led Zeppelin. He’s returning to 333 on Broad for a night of laid back tunes.

Friday: Roman Roast semi-final at 333 on Broad; international flavor

Finally it’s time for the Roman Roast on the River’s Battle of the Bands Final Four Showdown at 333 on Broad. For the last four weeks, Matt D & Mullins have been playing selections from 16 local bands on the morning show on 95.7 The Ridge FM. Listeners were directed to vote on RN-T.com to choose their favorite band. The final four was announced Monday. They are Jerry on the Moon, PerFeKt Peace, Southern Thread and Applefeet. The winner and runner up of this event will perform at the Roman Roast on the River BBQ Cookoff on May 8 at Ridge Ferry Park. The audience at this event will decide the winner.

This weekend marks the Seventh Annual Rome International Festival. This is a great opportunity to celebrate and share the cultural diversity that exists within our community. Kicking off the event is a concert at Bridgepoint Plaza featuring an excellent Chattanooga-based Afro-beat, jazz and reggae fusion band named Ogya. Also joining in the festivities is the Mountain Top Djembe Drummers and the Berry Middle School World Music Drummers.

Local acoustic country and rock artist Jon Byrd will return to the Moon Roof Bar for another excellent evening of tunes and good times. The weather will be perfect for a night at the Moon Roof with Jon.

The Groundhawgs will be back in full swing at the 400 Block Bar this Friday night. The Jones Brothers (Clayton and Clark) have been fronting this band for years and they know exactly how to put on a great show of acoustic string band music and have a great time while doing it.
